Verse and question study
Does Scripture endorse Rahab's lie?
Hebrews 11:31 praises her faith and James 2:25 her reception and protection of the messengers. Neither passage separately commends every word she spoke. Christians differ about deception to protect life; the narrative cannot become permission for self-serving dishonesty.
Was Rahab merely an innkeeper?
Some later interpretations soften her occupation, but the biblical descriptions identify her as a prostitute. Grace is clearer when her past is acknowledged rather than rewritten.

Historical and literary context
Joshua sends two men from Shittim to inspect the land, especially Jericho. The earlier mission of twelve spies ended in national unbelief; this smaller mission returns with confidence. Jericho controls an important point of access from the Jordan valley, but the narrative concentrates less on its fortifications than on a woman inside its walls. Rahab is identified as a prostitute. The text neither romanticizes her occupation nor hides her history. Her knowledge comes through reports of the exodus and Israel's victories east of the Jordan. The chapter interrupts a simple division between Israelite insiders and Canaanite outsiders: an outsider confesses the true God while an Israelite, Achan, will later violate His command.

Apologetic note
Rahab's deliverance prevents the conquest from being interpreted as an absolute doctrine of racial exclusion. A Canaanite can acknowledge the LORD and live among Israel. Her rescue does not remove the moral difficulty of judgment, but it establishes that ethnicity alone does not define God's enemies or His people.
