Verse and question study

Does verse 20 eliminate human responsibility?

The narrative portrays the kings actively opposing Israel while locating their resistance within God's judgment. It does not offer a complete philosophical account. Scripture's wider witness holds divine sovereignty and genuine human accountability together.

Why does Judges describe further conquest if Joshua took the land?

Joshua itself identifies remaining territory in chapter 13 and surviving populations in later allotments. The major coalitions are defeated, but occupation and local resistance continue. The books describe different stages rather than requiring identical completion in every sense.

Historical and literary context

After the southern campaign, Jabin of Hazor gathers northern and regional kings. Hazor stands at the head of this network in the narrative. The concentration of horses and chariots makes the threat appear greater than the armies already faced. The chapter summarizes a lengthy campaign rather than one brief afternoon. It closes the main conquest narrative and prepares for lists of defeated kings and the distribution of territory. Statements of comprehensive conquest must be interpreted alongside the book's own notices about places and populations remaining.

04

Apologetic note

Historical claims about Hazor's destruction involve questions of date and interpretation. The text distinguishes Hazor's burning from the treatment of other cities, so archaeological arguments should test the actual claim rather than an exaggerated assumption that every site was burned. This commentary does not identify one excavated layer as proof beyond dispute.
