Verse and question study
Were all these healings fulfilled during Jesus' ministry?
Jesus deliberately performed these signs and cited them as evidence of messianic arrival. Many were healed, but sickness and ecological disorder remain; the signs inaugurate a kingdom completed at resurrection.
Who is excluded as “unclean”?
Holiness is moral and covenantal, not ethnic elitism. The redeemed travel the road because God cleanses them; persistent impurity cannot be imported unchanged into His holy city.
Does “even fools” imply intellectual disability is sinful?
The phrase concerns wayfaring people lacking skill who nevertheless will not get lost. It assures accessible guidance, not contempt for persons with disabilities.
Is the highway literal?
Return from exile could involve actual roads, while the ideal safety and final end make it a theological image of God's prepared way. Material and symbolic dimensions can coexist.

Historical and literary context
This salvation poem reverses nearly every feature of chapter 34. Lebanon, Carmel, and Sharon regain the splendor lost under judgment. The language draws on exodus travel and return from exile but reaches beyond both toward messianic healing and final restoration. Jesus appeals to these signs when answering whether He is the expected One.
04
Apologetic note
The Gospels do not merely claim Jesus fulfilled vague hope; they report the specific clusters Isaiah names—sight, hearing, mobility, and speech—and preserve Jesus' appeal to them. The continuation of suffering is not evidence that the claim failed, because Isaiah itself connects full healing with the final homecoming and everlasting joy.
