Verse and question study

Why did Paul go to Jerusalem if the Holy Spirit warned him of danger?

The Holy Spirit revealed the consequences awaiting Paul in Jerusalem (imprisonment and affliction), but did not prohibit him from going. The believers who pleaded with Paul interpreted the warning as a command to avoid Jerusalem, whereas Paul understood that fulfilling his ministry meant embracing those trials faithfully.

Was Paul compromising the gospel by participating in the temple vow?

No. Paul firmly taught that salvation is by grace through faith apart from the works of the Law. However, he also followed Jewish cultural customs when appropriate to avoid causing unnecessary offense to fellow Jews (1 Corinthians 9:20). He was willing to observe the ceremonial vow because it did not contradict the truth of the gospel.

03

Historical and literary context

Acts 21 marks a critical transition in the book of Acts, shifting Paul’s ministry from missionary journeys to his trials and defense before various political and religious authorities. Having previously said farewell to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20, Paul proceeds toward Jerusalem knowing that hardship lies ahead. The Holy Spirit had continually warned him across multiple cities that bondage awaited him, yet Paul’s devotion to fulfilling his God-given mission remained firm. This journey echoes Jesus' own resolute journey to Jerusalem in the Gospels.

04

Apologetic note

The detail of Paul being accused of bringing a Gentile past the temple barrier aligns directly with archaeological discoveries. Inscribed stone barriers (the Soreg) have been found in Jerusalem warning non-Jews that passing beyond that point carried the penalty of death. This historical match underscores the authenticity and historical accuracy of Luke's account.
